Above The Line Article:
"Unshakable Commitment"
By Erik Carlson
Let’s face it…everyone can make a commitment.
I can tell you, I can tell my wife, or I can tell myself
that I will do something. The problem is, if it’s
only spoken, it doesn’t stand as much a chance of
being fulfilled as a commitment with action.
Our camp blog wizard, David Cooke (yes, he won American
Idol 2 years ago…oh wait, that’s a different
David Cooke…), said it best when he instructed the
campers to shout “A commitment is not what
you say, it’s what you do…” then
he didn’t stop there. He had the entire camp repeat
that statement, then he added the all important tagline…“With
Passion!”
That tagline is when I perked my ears at attention. A commitment
is not what I say, it’s what I do…with
passion! I was reminded that when we spend our
days laboring in careers and activities that don’t
tap into our passions, that is a horrible way to live, and
we were not designed to live that way.
I needed to hear that because that is the fuel that will
keep me fighting for my dreams when I hit brick walls. It
also inspired me to write down exactly what I will
do to reach my dreams.
The campers also did that (I love getting inspired by teenagers!)
when many took the opportunity to sign their names on a
commitment card. This card said that they will abstain from
illegal alcohol use, tobacco, and sexual promiscuity. I
saw both teenage boys and girls with tears streaming down
their face as they signed the card, because they knew it
was a commitment they were going to keep, but it would take
great sacrifice.
That commitment will become unshakable, because they took
the action step of signing their name to that card. Now,
they are doing, not merely saying.
Join me in having unshakable commitment in key areas of
our lives. Together, we’ll make a great impacting
change!
